Haim, KCLSU, 14 Nov 2012

Haim have attracted a lot of good press this year and deservedly so. I like the tight vocals, the variety of instrumental density and neat little studio tricks (like the closing door on Better Off) that their recorded tracks demonstrate. But I really, REALLY loved seeing them live.

These sisters know how to woo and wow a crowd. Their sold-out performance at Tutu’s, KCLSU was sparkling and energetic and I am grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to see them before they become massive.

Tutu’s was small enough for Este’s banter to feel personal and engaging, and her face had so many expressions that it could probably have sustained the show by itself.

Danielle gave a forceful performance on lead guitar.

Lyrics like “I can’t help about the shape I’m in / I can’t sing, I ain’t pretty” in their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Oh Well, seem incongruous coming from Alana in her “booty shorts” (as her elder sister called them), but I guess someone had to sing them.

Tribal drumming interspersed several of the songs in the set, driving the crowd wild, and these girls really do have rock hair.

It was a fantastic night, and I hope to be able to see them back headlining in London, soon. When’s the album going to be out?

I’m pretty sure I’ve not got this setlist in the right order, so please edit it if you have a better memory than me.

Haim (three girls with guitars) were supported by new act Death At Sea (four guys with guitars) and Foxes, who had no guitars, but who I’d love to see gigging with Chew Lips.

“When I Grow Up”, Matilda the Musical, music and lyrics by Tim Minchin

“When I grow up, I will be brave enough to fight the creatures that you have to fight beneath the bed each night to be a grown-up…just because you find that life’s not fair, it doesn’t mean that you just have to grin and bear it…just because I find myself in this story, it doesn’t mean that everything is written for me. If I think the ending is fixed already, I might as well be saying ‘I think that it’s okay.’ And that’s not right.”

Curators Coffee

So the Coffee Scene is really brewing in the city. As city workers surely grow tired of the big chains to get them through their long working days and nights, and look for more authentic and independent coffee shops near the office, they need not be disappointed, with places like Association by the Gherkin and my latest discovery, Curators Coffee found between Lime Street and Fenchurch street keeping the city caffeinated with awesome coffee. And it certainly does what it says on it’s website:

’ Devoted to specialty coffee, this new cafe has been created by a collection of people who all love great tasting coffee. Unique design is central to the Curators Coffee ethos and their innovative, fresh approach provides a stark contrast to the usual environment of other city cafes. Combined with their great service, it’s an uplifting coffee experience.’

As you approach Curators, you can only admire and let out an inward squeal of delight at the design, their branding and signage, their clean, simple concept and oh my gosh, as you enter, the stunning glass front and sides, beautiful wooden benches, quirky signs, beautiful cake counter on full view to those walking by and what made it for me, was the mint green coffee machine! Pastel paradise!

The welcome and service was relaxed, friendly, fun, happy, uplifting. The Long black was full of flavour, perfect strength, thickness and wonderful taste! The price was reasonable and it is super close to work so i think i will be frequenting after early shifts when i can’t get to Monmouth. Don’t really know how they could do any better, they even run brewing classes and workshops so they let others know how to make good coffee at home at the weekends when they have a well deserved rest!

I am so happy to have found it!

curator (from Latincurare meaning “take care”) is a manager or overseer. Traditionally, a curator or keeper of a cultural heritage institution (e.g., gallerymuseumlibrary or archive) is a content specialist responsible for an institution’s collections and involved with the interpretation of heritage material.

And this coffee shop is clearly successfully overseeing and keeping proper coffee poured out to the City of London.

Rating: 9/10

This is my favourite City coffee shop. I usually end up in there once, if not twice, a day.
